If you’ve never had a hearing test before or seen a hearing care specialist, it’s understandable to be a little apprehensive about what to expect.

All hearing tests and hearing health checks with us are free if you are aged 55 or over.

You do not need a GP or ENT referral to arrange a hearing test or hearing check, and we strongly recommend that you have your hearing checked annually.

Understanding your lifestyle, your needs and the challenges you face is crucial to providing the best solution and advice for you. That’s why our audiologists take the time to get to know you by asking a few simple questions about your lifestyle, family history and how you find the experience of being in different situations. Being aware of your type of hearing loss is helpful and you can read more about the different types.

We'll look inside your ear canal

Hearing tests are completely painless and non-invasive. Our audiologist will look inside your ear canal with the help of an otoscope. The health of your ears will be checked, including checking for any wax build-up that might be affecting your ability to hear. They will test your eardrums in a tympanometry test and outer ears for signs of any damage or infection before testing your hearing. If they find anything that needs further investigation, they will also make a referral for you to your GP. The hearing test appointment takes about an hour.

Your hearing test

By placing a pair of headphones over your ears, you’ll hear different sounds played at different frequencies (Hz) in one ear or the other and your specialist will ask you to push a button each time you hear a sound, so we can see how well you hear different levels and pitches. This is called an audiometry test.

Your hearing aid audiologist will share with you your baseline hearing test results. You can use these for future comparison, to measure whether your hearing has deteriorated. Your hearing test results are shown in a graph called an audiogram, which displays the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches or frequencies and indicates whether you have normal hearing, mild, moderate, severe or profound hearing loss. Your audiologist will talk you through your audiogram and answer any questions or concerns you may have. They will also show you what a normal audiogram should look like.

Being able to hear and understand conversations is obviously of paramount importance. So we’ll run a test to see how well you pick up a series of words and sounds at varying levels of volume, pitch and intensity.

It can be helpful to have a familiar voice with you to help in understanding how you hear the voices of those most important to you, and that’s why we encourage you to have a family member or friend with you during your hearing test for support. Hearing loss doesn’t just impact one person, it can affect those around them too.

We'll talk through your options and offer advice

Once your audiologist knows the level of your hearing loss, they’ll be able to talk through your options for clearer hearing with you. If you have no hearing loss, your hearing aid audiologist will of course share this with you too. If you find out that you do need to wear hearing aids, they can talk you through the many different types of hearing aids available and demonstrate to you the level of hearing you could achieve.
